SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Chelimo was named the Southern Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. Selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Chelimo posted the second-best 5000 meter time in the NCAA on Friday at the Stanford Invitational, one of the largest annual track meets in the nation that includes several elite college teams and many professionals. Chelimo's time of 13:32.89 set a new UNCG school record.
The Eldoret, Kenya, native has the top time in the SoCon by 40 seconds and currently holds the best time in the NCAA East Region.
The Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held in Cullowhee, N.C., on April 21-22.
