Chelimo posts nation's best time in 1,500m at Raleigh Relays
RALEIGH, N.C. – UNCG's track and field teams broke several school records on the first day of the Raleigh Relays on Friday, highlighted by Paul Chelimo's victory in the 1,500 meters at NC State's Paul Derr Track.
Chelimo's time of 3:40.25 is not only a new school record and personal best, but is also currently the fastest time in the country at that distance. He also broke the Raleigh Relays meet record that had stood since 1993 by more than four seconds.
Joey Thompson also set a new personal record in the 1,500m, running 3:48.90, which was good for fourth place. Paul Katam finished eighth in 3:54.72.
Abraham Kemboi set a new personal best time of his own in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:03.19 for a fifth-place finish.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Taylor Day (9:58.65) and Eric Williams (10:00.13) each had good races, finishing in 12th place and 13th place, respectively.
On the women's side, Kerry Hartman started the day well for the Spartans by shaving seven seconds off her personal best time in the 1,500 meters en route to a new school record. Hartman finished ninth overall in the event with a time of 4:27.04.
In the 5,000m, Chelsea Sumney paced the Spartans by finishing 15th in a time of 16:36.46. Not far behind was twin sister Shaina Sumney, who finished 21st, posting a time of 16:48.15.
Ginny Cronley set a new school record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36.38.59, good enough for a 16th-place finish.
