CHAPEL HILL, N.C. and SOUTH BEND, Ind. – UNCG sophomore Paul Chelimo led the Spartans at the Meyo Invitational by winning the 3,000 meter race and Shannon Hall claimed victory in the 800 meter race to lead UNCG at the Kent Taylor Invitational on Saturday.
Chelimo had one of the top performances in the nation this season as he won the 3,000 meter in a time of 7:49.87. That gave him the win over All-American Andrew Bayer from Indiana by half a second.
That time ranks as the third fastest in the nation this season and automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships.
Ashley Schnell also had a nice race in the women's 3,000 meters as she finished in fourth place after running a 9:26.42. That time broke her own school record she set last year at the Meyo Invitational by 13 seconds.
Joey Thompson turned in a fourth-place finish in the mile after running a 4:09.09. That time set a new personal-best and was less than a second off the school record.
At the Dick Taylor Invitational, Hall won the 800 meter race by nearly a second with a time of 2:19.93.
Kerry Hartman also had a nice day as she earned runner-up honors in the mile, while Taylor Hurst and Ginny Cronley each turned in third place performances in the 800 meters and 3,000 meters, respectively.
The Spartans will once again be split up next weekend as some members will run at the Liberty Quad, while other will compete at the Spire Invitational.
