GREENSBORO, N.C. – Paul Katam earned All-Academic honors for the 2011 track & field season, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday.
Katam was one of 420 male student-athletes from around the nation to receive the honor, although he was one of only seven runners from the Southern Conference.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Katam finished the school year with a 3.42 GPA in pre-nursing and earned the award after competing in the NCAA East Regional during the outdoor season in the 10,000 meters. At that event, Katam finished in 13th place, one spot shy of advancing to the NCAA National Championship.
Katam earned Southern Conference All-Freshman team honors during the indoor season, as well, in the 5,000 meters.
