BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ashley Schnell claimed the Southern Conference title in the 1,500 meters and Chelsea and Shaina Sumney were named All-SoCon in the 5,000 meters on the final day of the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium on Saturday.

Schnell, who won the SoCon title in the 3,000 meters during indoor season, ran the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:27.06 to win the title by nearly two seconds. Her time broke her own school record that she set at the Wake Forest Open earlier this season by three seconds.

Chelsea Sumney earned runner-up honors in the 5,000 meters to earn All-SoCon accolades in the event after running a 17:52.76. Her sister, Shaina, was under two seconds behind her in a time of 17:54.44 to finish in third and also claim All-SoCon honors.

On the men's side, Joey Thompson finished in eighth place in the 800 meter finals after running a personal-best time of 1:53.17.

Also, Kenny Hinman earned SoCon All-Freshman Team honors in the 5,000 meters after running a 16:33.37.

The Spartans will now compete at the prestigious Penn Relays Carnival beginning on Thursday.
