Wyatt leads UNCG on day one of 2010 SoCon Outdoor Championships
BOONE, N.C. - TJ Wyatt won his heat in the 800 meters to advance to the finals to lead the Spartans during the first day of the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Wyatt finished his heat in 1:53.01 to win it and was the second-fastest runner to qualify for the 800 meter finals. Lamar Watkins and Taylor Hurst also ran in the 800 meter prelims, but they finished just under a second away from qualifying for the finals.
Also on the men's side, AJ Savoia finished in sixth place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:38.29 to finish in sixth place and give UNCG some team points.
Michelle Chewens paced the women's team as she nearly qualified for the finals in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:18.25 was good enough for second place in her heat and shave two seconds off her personal-best, but she was the first runner to not qualify for the finals as she finished in ninth place overall.
Tiffany Garber and Jenna Paley also had nice races as they barely missed scoring team points for the Spartans in the 10,000 meters. Garber's time of 40:12.37 and Paley's time of 40:17.52 was good enough for ninth and 10th place, respectively.
The Spartans will wrap up the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. and finishing at 4:45 p.m. with the awards ceremony.
