Thompson breaks school record at Duke Twilight
DURHAM, NC – Freshman Joey Thompson shattered the school record in the 5,000 meters by over two seconds to lead UNC Greensboro at the Duke Twilight meet on Sunday evening.
Thompson continued his impressive freshman campaign by running the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:50.17. His time broke the previous school record, set by Xavier Rutz in 2007, by 2.71 seconds.
TJ Wyatt, fresh off being named All-SoCon in the 800 meters last weekend, finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.92. His time was second-best in school history, just 1.19 seconds from breaking the school record. The time was also the fastest on the team this season.
On the women’s side, Tiffany Garber set the fastest time of the season for the team in the 5,000 meters. Her time of 18:32.40 was the fourth-best time in school history as well and was also the fastest on the team this season by four seconds.
The Spartans will continue competition in order to qualify for the NCAA Regionals next weekend as they compete at the UNC Last Chance on Friday afternoon.
