Thompson claims SoCon Track Athlete of the Week honor

SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro distance runner Joey Thompson has been named this week’s Southern Conference Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Thursday.

Thompson broke the UNCG school record in the 1500-meter run last weekend at the UNC Invitational with a time of 3:54.75. That time was almost two and a half second better than the previous school record that was set in 2007 by Nick Vaccaro.

His time currently places him third in the Southern Conference at 1500-meters and qualifies the freshman for the USATF Junior National Championships.

UNCG returns to action this weekend as the Spartans compete at the Davidson Invitational on Saturday, April 18.
