Thompson leads UNCG at 31st Annual Niswonger Invitational

JOHNSON CITY, TN – Joey Thompson’s fifth place finish in the 3000m led the UNCG indoor track & field team at the prestigious 31st Annual Niswonger Invitational on Saturday at the campus of East Tennesse State University.

In the 3000m seeded race, Thompson had the best finish of the day for UNCG as he ran an 8:32.53 to finish fourth.  His run also broke the school record by over seven seconds.  Andy Clyne also had a great day after he ran a 4:30.79 in the mile seeded race for a tenth place finish.

Taylor Hurst had the best finish of the day for the Spartans in the 800m after finishing 15th with a time of 1:58.11.  Lamar Watkins led the Spartans in the 800m unseeded race as he finish in 23rd place after running a 2:02.65. 

Tiffany Garber had the best finish for the women’s squad after placing 12th in the 3000m race.  Mary Rutz led UNCG in the 5000m with a 32nd place finish after running a time of 19:38.13.

UNCG also had good runs in both of the mile races.  In the seeded mile race Sherrika Jordan finished 14th with a time of 4:28.73.  Michelle Chewens led the way in the unseeded mile race after she ran a 5:25.08.

The Spartans will now have 12 days off before they make the short trip to Chapel Hill, NC for the Tar Heel Invitational on Feb. 13.
