GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro track and field team members Anthony Savoia and Andrew Clyne competed at the 2008 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Columbus, OH June 20-22.
Savoia and Clyne, both whom are rising sophomores, qualified for the prestigious event by virtue of times ran during the 2008 UNCG outdoor track and field season. Savoia qualified in the 3000 meter steeplechase while Clyne participated in the 1500 meters.
Clyne, a native of Washingtonville, NY, competed in the 1500 meter preliminaries on June 20. He crossed the finish line in 17th place with a time of 4:03.97, six seconds off of his personal best of 3:57.25 but failed to finish in the Top 12 which would have advanced him to the event finals. Nectaly Barbosa, from Arizona State took the top spot with a time of 3:50.92.
Savoia, who was competing in the 3000 meter steeplechase, took 17th place in the event finals on June 22. The Haverstraw, NY native, who is the UNCG school record holder in the event, finished with a time of 9:52.41. Curtis Carr, running unattached, claimed the top spot with a time of 8:55.64.
The next event on the summer calendar for USA Track and Field is the USA Olympic Team Trials slated for June 27- July 6 in Eugene, OR.
