CULLOWHEE, NC – The UNC Greensboro track and field teams concluded action at the 2008 Southern Conference Outdoor Track Championships on Sunday. The Spartans brought home two all-conference performers in Anthony Savoia and Andrew Clyne who finished in the top three in the 3000 meter men’s steeplechase and the 800 meter run, respectively.
Western Carolina took the women’s title with 216 points while Appalachian State claimed the men’s title with 315 points. The Appalachian State women took second place while Western Carolina took second place on the men’s side.
The UNCG men had a good day and had five top 10 finishes on the afternoon, led by Andrew Clyne’s third place finish in the 800 meters. The Washingtonville, NY native crossed the finish line in a time of 1:55.13 to earn All-SoCon honors. Taylor Hurst was UNCG’s next top finisher with a time of 1:56.06 while Terry Wyatt rounded out the Spartan finishers taking sixth-place with a time of 1:57.54.
Justin Ruppe set a new personal record in the 5000 meters with a time of 16:19.61 shaving over thirty seconds off his previous personal best of 16:48.69. Xavier Rutz led UNCG finishers with a time of 15:34.75 while Josh Wyatt crossed the finish line in a time of 15:46.12.
Jeremy Cannon took fifth in the men’s javelin with a throw of 48.15 meters and the 4 x 400 relay took sixth place with a time of 3:29.62.
On the women’s side the Jess Weber was UNCG’s top finisher in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:48.75 while Sherrika Jordan continued her great outdoor season with a time of 4:49.92.
The 4 x 400 relay took second place with a time of 4:12.94 while Mary Ann Rutz took 14th in the 5000 meter run with a time of 19:10.24.
The Spartans will race for the last time this season next weekend when they head to the Duke Twilight on May 4.
