Men's Tennis Hosts The Citadel

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 4-0 UNCG men's tennis program opens conference play when it hosts The Citadel Saturday, March 2. The match has been moved to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center and will now begin at 5:15 p.m. due to weather.                                  

"The team is very excited about competing this weekend against The Citadel," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "Our guys are prepared for a tough Conference battle." 

The Spartans are coming off of a 6-1 victory against UNC Asheville. 

In doubles, freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) teamed up to win in a tiebreaker against Matt Waissen and Adrien Langeard, 9-8 (7-4). 

Freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla. / Lakeland) and junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey / METU Development Foundation) beat Daniel Kripak and John Schubel, 8-5. 

Sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) and freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista) won 8-6 against Alex Croker and Brett Landau. 

In singles, Sarioglu lost to Langeard, 6-4, 6-1. Dougherty defeated Waisson, 6-2, 6-2, while Murray picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win against Kripak. 

Phillips fought to defeat Croker, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, while Mack beat Schubel, 6-4, 7-5. Smith won his match 6-4, 6-3 against Landau. 

UNCG is led by sophomores Randy Phillips and Cameron Smith who are both 4-0 in singles. The doubles tandems of James Dougherty/Phillips and Ahmet Sarioglu/Gaston Mack also remain undefeated at 4-0 in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. 

The Citadel netters haven't played in a competitive match since Feb. 10 and remain 5-1 on the season due to their last three matches cancelled because of rain. The Citadel has already matched their win total from a season ago and is off to its best start since 1999.
