GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis program will host it's second match of the season against Campbell at the UNCG tennis courts, Saturday, Feb. 9, at noon.
"We have a tough match against Campbell tomorrow," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "They have a lot of talent at the top of their line-up. This being our first match outdoors with the elements will challenge the mental toughness of our team as well."
The Spartans are 1-0 after defeating Coastal Carolina, 5-2 on Feb. 1, when UNCG won two out of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches.
Freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) won their doubles match against Yusuke Kusuda and Ted Nilsson, 8-6.
Junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey / METU Development Foundation) and freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla. / Lakeland) fought hard to win 8-7 (8-6) against Garik Yedigarian and Matias Di Pasquale.
Freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista) took on Yedigarian, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, while Phillips clinched the match when he beat Di Pasquale in a tough second-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).
Mack won an easy 6-4, 6-3 match against Christofides. Sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) beat Hunter Whalen, 6-4, 6-3.
Campbell holds a 3-2 record after winning their last match against North Carolina, 5-2.
Fernando Guillen of the Camels took victories against North Carolina as well as knocking off No. 21 Cameron Silvermann of Elon, in a three set match with a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 on Jan. 31. Guillen went 2-0 for the season and grabbed the Big South Choice Hotels Player of the Week honor.
