Men's Tennis Concludes Final Tournament at Army Challenge

WEST POINT, N.Y. UNCG men's tennis concluded its final tournament of the year prior to the start of dual-match play when the Spartans competed against host Army, Marist and Gardner-Webb for the Army Challenge. The four teams played a series of singles and doubles matches between Friday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 27 at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

"Very pleased with the progress of our team," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "We still have a long road until we are a championship team." 

UNCG defeated Army on the third and final day of the Army Challenge, winning four out of four doubles matches. 

Sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) and freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) went up against Army's Shelton and McCasin, beating them 8-3. 

Freshman Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla. / Lakeland) and junior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey / METU Development Foundation) teamed up to win 8-3 against Isoh and McCormick. 

Freshman William Albright (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley) and junior Jimmy Roueche (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley) beat Henry Jang-Milsten and Sienko in a tie-breaking score of 8-7 (8-6). 

Sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) and freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista) picked up a win against Sam Jang-Milsten and Procter, 8-4. 

The Spartans will return to action when they host Coastal Carolina for their first dual-match of the year, Feb. 1, at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. Play will begin at 12 pm.
