Men's Tennis Open's 2013 Spring Season at Army Challenge
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team opens the 2013 spring campaign at the Army Challenge in West Point, N.Y. from Friday, Jan. 25 through Sunday. The Spartans will face players from host Army, Marist and Gardner-Webb.
UNCG has not competed since early November. The Spartans went 9-13 in duals last season, including 6-4 in Southern Conference contests.
Freshman William Albright (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley) has totaled a team-high of six singles wins through the fall season, while freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) enter the weekend with a 9-3 doubles mark. Freshman Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista) ended the fall with an overall record of 6-5.
GWU already has a dual under its belt in 2013 as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to No. 18 North Carolina, 6-1, on Jan. 19. Brendan Dempsey was responsible for GWU's point against the Tar Heels, winning at No. 6 singles in three sets. GWU went 6-16 in 2012.
Marist opened 2013 at the Harvard Winter Invite and has yet to play a dual match this calendar year. The Red Foxes defeated Army 5-2 last season in a dual and are led by Joseph Dube and Dalen Klassen who enter the weekend with 14 wins each this year.
Army last competed in late October. Freshman Harrison McCormick totaled a team-best six singles wins (6-7) through the fall tournament season, while his teammates Ben Davies and Sam Jang-Milsten both carry three-match winning streaks into 2013.
This weekend's competition marks the final tune up before the Spartans begin dual match play. UNCG will host Coastal Carolina at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center, Feb. 1 at noon.
