CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The UNCG men's tennis team completed their first day at the UTC/Steve Baras Fall Classic, Friday, Sept. 28.

"I thought our fitness level looked good," said head coach Thomas Mozur. "We are competing hard, but coming up short in some of the singles matches. Doubles looked solid."

Freshman William Albright (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley) picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Lee University's Patrick Kim, before beating Garrison Laduca from Samford, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. 

Junior Jimmy Roueche (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley) moved on the quarter final round due to a bye and won against Lee University's Kevin Tan, 2-1 before Tan retired.

Freshman James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) beat Chris Smith from UTC, 6-3, 6-2, but fell to ETSU'S Jesus Bandres, 6-3, 6-1.

Classmate, Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla. / Lakeland) had a third-set win against Kennesaw State's Alex Pena, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1, but then lost to Tomas Legzdins from MTSU, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Sophomore Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C. / Ragsdale) picked up an easy win against Jacksonville State's Felipe Diaz, 6-1, 6-0. Smith fought in a first-set tiebreaker, but fell to Samford's Austin Ackers, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2).

In doubles play, sophomore Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga. / Brookwood) teamed up with Dougherty to take down Jacksonville State's Nenad Marcec and Axel Sundberg, 8-5.

Albright and Roueche won 8-6 against Richard Gamble and Daniel Hardesty from Lee University, while Mack and Smith moved on to the semi-final round due to a bye in the quarterfinals. 

Play at the UTC/Steve Baras Fall Classic resumes Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
