GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's tennis head coach Thomas Mozur announced a challenging 2012-13 schedule Wednesday that includes two NCAA Tournament participants in Binghamton and Southern Conference Tournament champion College of Charleston. The Spartans return four letterwinners from last season's team and welcome in six freshmen to the 2012-13 squad.
"I am looking forward to the 2012-2013 schedule," said Mozur. "We have a young team and I'm very excited to watch them compete and improve throughout the year."
The Spartans open the fall season at the Elon Fall Invitational Sept. 21-23 before traveling to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Chattanooga Fall Invitational (Sept. 28-30). UNCG then makes the short trip to Winston-Salem to take part in the Wake Forest Invitational Oct. 12-14. The Blue and Gold end the month of October at the Carolina ITA Regional (Oct. 17-21) held at the Cary Tennis Center.
UNCG wraps up the fall season at the Winthrop Fall Invitational Nov. 2-4 in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Spartans open the spring portion of the schedule Jan. 25-27 at the Army Challenge in West Point, NY. UNCG returns home to begin dual match play against Big South rivals Coastal Carolina (Feb. 1) and Campbell (Feb. 9) at the UNCG Tennis Complex.
The Blue and Gold next head to Charlotte, N.C. to face Charlotte (Feb. 16) which had 15 wins last season. The Spartans return home to battle Atlantic 10 member Richmond Feb. 17 at the UNCG Tennis Complex. UNCG ends the month of February with a road match against in-state rival UNC Asheville (Feb. 24).
The Spartans host The Citadel March 2 for the first Southern Conference match of the season. UNCG travels to Boiling Springs, N.C. to face Big South foe Gardner-Webb (March 5), then returns home for two matches against SoCon opponent Wofford Mar. 9 and a non-conference match against Texas Pan American (March 12), the alma mater of Spartan assistant coach Brett Bernstein.
UNCG heads out on the road to take on SoCon runner-up Samford March 14. The Bulldogs won 17 matches and had a 9-1 league record last season. The Spartans finish the road trip against Chattanooga (March 16) in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Blue and Gold return home March 19 hoping to seek revenge against SoCon foe Furman who defeated the Spartans in the SoCon Tournament last season. UNCG hosts Conference USA member East Carolina March 21 at the UNCG Tennis Complex.
The Spartans travel to Boone, N.C. to face in-state foe Appalachian State March 29 before returning home to host NCAA Tournament participant Binghamton (March 30) at the UNCG Tennis Complex. The Bearcats finished the 2012 season with a 15-12 record, including eight-straight wins to earn the automatic berth for the American East conference.
UNCG finishes the home SoCon slate with matches against Elon (April 2) and Georgia Southern (April 6) at the UNCG Tennis Complex.
The Blue and Gold wrap up the regular season with road matches against Davidson April 7 and 2012 SoCon Tournament champion College of Charleston (April 12). The Cougars won 18 matches and defeated Samford in the finals 4-0 last year. The 2013 SoCon Tournament will be held at Elon University from April 18-21.
