Winthrop tops UNCG, 7-0

ROCK HILL, S.C. – UNCG's men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback at Winthrop on Thursday.

Orcun Seyrek and Ahmet Sarioglu picked up the lone win of the day for the Spartans (3-5), topping Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubin at No. 1 doubles, 8-6.

UNCG very nearly pulled out the doubles point at No. 2, but Dylan Comerford and Rich Meade earned the 9-7 win over the Spartans' Randy Phillips and Chanon Varapongsittikul. Yuta Hirokawa and Luka Stanic downed Jimmy Roueche and Cameron Smith at No. 3 as the Eagles clinched the point.

Winthrop made a clean sweep of it in singles play, with Nos. 2 and 3 going to super tiebreakers. At No. 2, Kubi rebounded from a first-set loss to top Sarioglu, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0. Comerford also overcame a first-set loss to Varapongsittikul at No. 3, taking the 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 win.

At No. 1, Ruppin topped Seyrek, 6-0, 6-4. Hirokawa dropped Phillips 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4, Stanic defeated Smith at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2, and Meade took a 6-4, 6-4 win over Roueche at No. 6.

UNCG returns to action March 4 when it opens Southern Conference play at Georgia Southern at noon.
