Spartans down Belmont 4-3 at Piedmont Indoor

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's men's tennis team snapped a two-match skid with a 4-3 win over Belmont at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center on Friday, with Chanon Varapongsittikul winning a three-set match at No. 3 singles to clinch the five-hour affair for the Spartans.

With the match tied at 3, Varapongsittikul earned a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over the Bruins' Fernando Mussolini to wrap up the win for the Spartans (3-4).

UNCG got things going with a doubles sweep. Varapongsittikul and freshman Randy Phillips earned an 8-3 win over Mussolini and Rodrigo Amaral at No. 2 and Ahmet Sarioglu and Orcun Seyrek clinched the point with an 8-6 win over Renato Antun and Henrique Norbiato at No. 1.

At No. 3, UNCG's Jimmy Roueche and Cameron Smith emerged victorious in a battle with Rafael Matos and Bruno Silva, taking the 9-8 (7-3) win to complete the sweep.

In singles play, Norbiato pulled Belmont (1-4) even with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Phillips at No. 4. Seyrek put the Spartans back on top with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Antun at No. 1, but Silva again evened the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Roueche at No. 6.

Smith overcame a first-set loss for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Matos at No. 5, but Amaral grabbed a 7-6 (7-0), 4-6, 6-1 victory over Sarioglu at No. 2 to put the fate of the match in the hands of Varapongsittikul and Mussolini at No. 3.

The Spartans improved to 26-2 in their last 28 home matches, including an 8-0 indoor mark. That streak stretches back to the 2009 season.

UNCG returns to action March 1 at Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. That match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
