Spartan pair to play for doubles title at UNCG Fall Invite
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore Chanon Varapongsittikul and freshman Randy Phillips won a pair of doubles matches Saturday at the UNCG Fall Invitational to advance to Sunday's flight final at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
Phillips and Ahmet Sarioglu will also play in the consolation finals of their respective singles flights.
Varapongsittikul and Phillips will face Campbell's Garrison Kinney and Ondrej Kralik for the B flight title at 9 a.m. Sunday. The Spartan duo, seeded third in the flight, downed Liberty's Jorge Azuero and Wayne Harrell 8-3 in the quarterfinals and knocked off second-seeded Josep Baro and James Jones of Campbell in the semifinals.
UNCG's Will Kent and Jimmy Roueche upset top-seeded Matt Slamecka and Tristan Stayt of Liberty 8-3 to advance to the semis of the same flight but fell 8-6 to Kinney and Kralik as the Campbell pair prevented an all-UNCG final.
In the A doubles bracket, UNCG's Orcun Seyrek and Sarioglu, seeded second in the flight, fell to Campbell's August Iwdal and Adrien Rossignon 8-6 in the quarters. Seyrek and Sarioglu picked up an 8-2 win over Gardner-Webb's Ernest Alberch and Stephen Martin in the consolation bracket to advance to Sunday's semis.
In the consolation bracket at A1 singles, Sarioglu earned a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Gardner-Webb's Adam Knutsson to reach the semis, where he downed Gardner-Webb's Korhan Ates 6-4, 7-6(3) to reach Sunday's consolation final.
Phillips dropped Gardner-Webb's Brendan Dempsey in the consolation quarters at A3, 6-2, 6-1, then defeated Elon's Andrew Prince 7-5, 6-4 to earn a spot in the final.
Seyrek, Varapongsittikul and Roueche fell in the semifinals of their respective flights' main draws. Seyrek, the No. 2 seed in the A1 singles flight, dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 decision to Virginia Tech's Mauricio Antun.
Varapongsittikul, seeded second at A2, was topped 6-4, 7-5 by Campbell's Baro, while Roueche, the top seed at A4 singles, fell 6-2, 6-3 to Liberty's Stayt.
In the A3 consolation bracket, Kent picked up a walkover win in the quarters and fell to Liberty's Dillon Segur, 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals.
The final day of the UNCG Fall Invitational begins at 9 a.m. Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
