Defending-champion Spartans get first-round bye at SoCon Championship

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Defending-champion UNCG has earned a first-round bye at the upcoming Southern Conference Championship and will face the winner of the Furman-The Citadel match in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The third-seeded Spartans finished the regular season 15-5 overall and 8-2 in SoCon play, finishing third in the league standings. The sixth-seeded Paladins finished 7-17 overall and 5-5 in SoCon play, while the 11th-seeded Bulldogs were 3-20 overall and 0-10 against the league.

Furman was UNCG's final opponent of the regular season, with the Spartans taking a 6-1 win on April 11. UNCG downed The Citadel 7-0 on April 3.

Furman and The Citadel will square off in Wednesday's first round at 2 p.m.

UNCG won its first SoCon title last season, beating Furman and Elon en route to its first-ever NCAA bid.
