Seyrek named SoCon Player of the Week for second time this season
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG junior Orcun Seyrek was named the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played March 14-21, the league office announced Tuesday.
The award is Seyrek's second this season. He was also the league's player of the week on March 9.
Seyrek went a combined 4-0 on the week, going 2-0 without dropping a set in singles and 2-0 in doubles, all at No. 1.
Against Charlotte on Thursday, Seyrek took a 6-2, 6-1 win over Charles Martin-Lecamp. Seyrek teamed with Timion Meijs for an 8-4 win over Martin-Lecamp and Moritz Bernhoerster in doubles action. The Spartans beat Charlotte 5-2.
Returning to Southern Conference play on Saturday, Seyrek rolled past Davidson's Chris Mark, 6-2, 6-4. In doubles play, he and Meijs cruised to an 8-2 win over Calum Gee and Joe Schafer.
Seyrek has won five of his last six matches in singles play and stands 16-7 overall with an 8-5 dual mark. In doubles play, he and Meijs are 4-2 at No. 1.
The award is the fourth of Seyrek's career. He also took the honor twice in 2009, when he was the SoCon Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
The Spartans, winners of six straight matches, are 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the SoCon to sit atop the league standings. UNCG returns to action Wednesday when it hosts East Carolina at the UNCG Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
