UNCG moves to 2-0 in SoCon play with 5-2 win over Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UNCG moved to 2-0 in the Southern Conference with its third straight win, a 5-2 road triumph over Samford on Thursday.
For the third straight match, UNCG (7-3, 2-0 SoCon) won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Orcun Seyrek and Timion Meijs took an 8-4 win over Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds at No. 1, while Ahmet Sarioglu and Chanon Varapongsittikul downed Fernando Costa and Carson Kadi by the same score at No. 3.
At No. 2, Yaroslav Litus and Jacob Wright saw their four-match winning streak come to an end with an 8-4 loss to Zac Dunkle and Alexander Sajonz.
The Spartans took singles wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 to grab the win. Meijs dispatched Dunkle at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4, and Sarioglu topped Reynolds at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2.
Litus and Varapongsittikul both rebounded from opening-set losses, as Litus dropped Abalos at No. 3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Varapongsittikul defeated Costa 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
Samford (7-3, 0-1 SoCon), which dropped its second straight match, got a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win from Kadi over Seyrek at No. 1. Sajonz handed UNCG redshirt freshman Zach Reece his first loss of the dual season, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6. Reece falls to 6-1.
UNCG returns to action on Saturday at Chattanooga. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
