Seyrek ranked No. 95 in ITA preseason rankings
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro sophomore Orcun Seyrek is ranked No. 95 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Top 125 preseason rankings, which were released over the weekend.
Last year, Seyrek, a native of Istanbul, Turkey, won the Southern Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards. He became the first player to sweep both awards since the Freshman of the Year award was established by the league in 1992. He was the first freshman to win the Player of the Year award since Yaser Zaatini of East Tennessee State took the honor in 1990. Zaatini went on to with the honor three times during his career. Seyrek was also UNCG's first-ever Conference Player of the Year in the Division I era (beginning in 1991).
Seyrek went 19-2 last spring, including 9-1 in league play, as UNCG's No. 1 singles player. Both of his losses in the spring came against nationally-ranked players. For the overall season, he finished the season with a 25-4 mark, the fourth-highest single-season win total in school history. He was also 16-7 overall and 13-6 this spring in doubles play with Arsel Kumdereli.
Seyrek's performance last season was a big part of UNCG's turnaround from a three-win season in 2007-08 to a 15-8 mark last season and a tie for third in the SoCon standings with a 7-3 mark in league play. The Spartans also won a Southern Conference Tournament match for the first time in seven years last season.
Seyrek was the only Southern Conference player to appear in the rankings.
UNCG opens the 2009-10 campaign this coming weekend when they host the UNCG Fall Invitational beginning Friday and concluding on Sunday.
