SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro's
Orcun Seyrek has been named Southern Conference Men's Tennis
Player of the Week for all matches from April 6-12, the conference
office announced Tuesday.
Seyrek went 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles competition last
week. It is the second time in the last three weeks that the
freshman from Mersin, Turkey has won the award. Seyrek also won the
award back on March 31 and was named the SoCon's Player of
the Month for March.
The Spartans collected three victories last week with wins over
Charlotte (5-2), Georgia Southern (4-3) and Richmond (7-0).
The Player of the Week award is voted on by the league's
sports information directors .
Seyrek posted three victories at No. 1 singles. He started
the week with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Charlotte 's Moritz
Bernhoerster before topping Georgia Southern's Joris
DeWeerdt, 6-2, 6-2. Seyrek then finished the week with a 6-1,
6-3 win over Richmond 's Sami Belakhlef. Seyrek has now
won 14 straight singles matches and has improved his record to 18-1
this spring, including 8-0 in league play. Overall, Seyrek is
now 23-3 on the year.
The team of Seyrek and Arsel Kumdereli went 2-1 in doubles play
last week. They topped Charlotte's Bernhoerster and
Jeff Archer, 8-7. Seyrek and Kumdereli lost an 8-7 decision
to Georgia Southern's DeWeerdt and Matthew Sands before
topping Richmond 's Belakhlef and Sam Hyland by a score of
8-2. Seyrek and Kumdereli are now 13-5 in dual matches this
spring.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they visit No. 61-ranked Elon for a Southern Conference match. Seyrek is slated to face No. 76-ranked Damon Gooch in singles action during that matchup.
