UNCG's Orcun Seyrek named SoCon Men's Tennis Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro freshman Orcun Seyrek was named the Southern Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday for his outstanding play in UNCG's conference victories last week.

The Spartans topped Davidson, 5-2, and rallied for a 4-3 win over Appalachian State on Sunday to stay tied atop the Southern Conference standings at 5-0. UNCG is tied with Furman and Elon atop the league standings as the Spartans are off to their best start in league play since 2001, when they shared the conference regular season title. If the Spartans can get by Wofford on Saturday, UNCG is on course for a first-place showdown with Furman this coming Sunday.

Seyrek posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Davidson's Eric Noble at No. 1 singles Saturday afternoon.  Seyrek rallied for a three-set victory over Appalachian State's Bobby Lake (6-4, 6-7, 6-3) on Sunday afternoon. Trailing 3-1 in the match, UNCG rallied to win all three remaining singles matches to claim a 4-3 victory over the Mountaineers.

Seyrek teamed with Arsel Kumdereli at No. 1 doubles and recorded wins over Davidson's Eric Noble and Walker Lyons (8-6) and ASU's team of Lake and Lee Floyd (8-3).

The freshman from Istanbul, Turkey, has won nine straight matches. His 13-1 mark this spring is the best in the conference this season (.929 winning pct.). Including the fall tournament slate, Seyrek is now 18-3 overall this season in singles play and 13-4 with Kumdereli in doubles action.

UNCG (10-4) returns to action Thursday when it visits Gardner-Webb.
