UNCG falls to No. 61 Elon, 6-1; Seyrek streak snapped

ELON, NC – Andrey Bubnov won a three-setter over Oscar Podlewski at No. 2 singles, but that was UNC Greensboro's only victory of the afternoon in falling to No. 61-ranked Elon, 6-1, in Southern Conference men's tennis action Wednesday afternoon.

Bubnov won the opening set over Podlewski, 6-4, before Podlewski responded with a 6-3 win in the second set. Bubnov won the match, which last just under two hours, when he won a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-7.

In the feature match of the day, UNCG freshman Orcun Seyrek had his 14-match winning streak snapped by No. 76-ranked Damon Gooch in a two-and-a-half hour marathon. Seyrek won the opening set by a 6-4 score, before Gooch won the second set 6-4 and a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-6.

With the loss, Seyrek is now 18-2 on the spring with both losses coming to ranked players. He is 23-4 overall on the year and 8-1 in Southern Conference action.

With the win, Elon (18-5, 6-1) clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's Southern Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by Elon. UNCG (13-7, 6-3) will either be the No. 3 or No. 4 seed. The Spartans are tied with Wofford for third place at 6-3 with the Terriers holding the tie-breaker. The Spartans close out the regular season with The Citadel on Friday.
