CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Arsel Kumdereli upset the top seed and second-seeded Andrey Bubnov advanced to highlight UNC Greensboro’s first day of action at the Baras Fall Invitiational on Friday.
Kumdereli, a sophomore from Mersin, Turkey, knocked off UAB’s Hans Spangenberg by identical 7-6 scores to upset the top seed in Flight A Singles. Fellow Spartan Andrey Bubnov, the No. 2 seed in Flight A, needed three sets, but staved off an upset in his match. The junior from Belgorod, Russia turned away Scott Robertson from Jacksonville State, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
In other singles action, Taylor Befus won his first round match over Ball State’s John Crawford Freeman, 6-2 and 6-4, before falling to Jacksonville State’s Chris Duke, 6-4 and 6-1, in Flight B action. Third-seeded Martin Redelinghuys was upset in Flight B action. After winning the first set, 6-3, Redelinghuys lost consecutive sets to Mel Segota from Eastern Kentucky, 6-1 and 6-3.
David Lupinetti advanced in Flight C action with a pair of wins, topping Jacksonville State’s Justin Andrews in straight sets and rallying from down a set to top UAB’s Miguel Artero Molina, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. William Adeimy bounced back from an opening round loss in Flight C to win a consolation bracket match over Ball State’s Martin Crockett, 6-1 and 6-3.
Doubles action was continuing late Friday night.
Saturday’s action is scheduled to resume at 8:30 am with singles action.
