GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro got singles wins from Arsel Kumdereli and Martin Redelinghuys, but came up on the short end of a 5-2 decision against Georgia Southern in Southern Conference men’s tennis action Saturday afternoon.
Kumdereli, a sophomore from Mersin, Turkey, topped Joris DeWeerdt in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2, to pick up a win at No. 2 singles. Redelinghuys, a senior from Cape Town, South Africa, bounced back for a three-set win at No. 3 singles. He won the opening set, 6-4, over Borja Malet before Malet took the second set, 6-0. However, Redelinghuys stormed back to win the third set, 6-4 and, earn the win.
However, Georgia Southern (8-8, 4-2 SoCon) won the remaining four singles matches – two of them in three sets – and came away with two of the three doubles pro-sets to win the match. UNCG’s lone doubles win came when Andrey Bubnov and Yaroslav Litus topped DeWeerdt and Matthews Sands, 8-7, 7-2 in the tie-breaker.
UNCG visits Richmond for a non-conference match Sunday at 1 pm.
