UNCG wraps up weekend at UNC Fall Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Andrey Bubnov came back to win the consolation bracket of the top flight in singles and the duo of Jason Steinhorn and Taylor Befus finished second in the third doubles flight to highlight UNC Greensboro’s action at the 2006 UNC Fall Invitational sponsored by One-A-Day Vitamins.

Steinhorn and Befus began the weekend with an 8-2 pro-set win over East Carolina’s Matt Peeler and Greg Simon on Friday night. They followed that with an 8-4 win over Navy’s Alex James and Jarrad Smoke on Saturday. However, the Spartan duo lost a thriller in Sunday’s final to South Carolina State’s Ivan Millvojevic and Jan Langer, 9-8, 8-6 in the tie-breaker.

Bubnov opened his singles action on Friday afternoon with a straight-set loss to North Carolina’s Chris Kearney, 6-3 and 6-4. However, he reeled off three straight wins after that, all of them in thrilling fashion. He rallied to beat Navy’s Jason Hill 2-6, 7-5, 1-0, with a 10-5 decision in the 10-point tiebreaker. The sophomore from Belgorod, Russia then won a pro-set over Maryland’s David Kwon late Saturday evening, 9-7, to advance to Sunday’s consolation bracket final. He rallied again to win that match, defeating Dragen Bisercic, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0, including 10-8 in the 10-point tie-breaker.

UNCG will compete at the Elon Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
