GREENSBORO, NC – Former Spartan tennis player Paul Goode won the men’s open singles championship of the NC State Closed Tennis Championship at the Sherwood Swim and Racquet Club this past weekend.
En route to his 7-5, 7-6 victory over David Hopkins of Winston-Salem in the final, the Boone, NC resident, defeated Kevin Beard of Mathews, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and dispatched Dipesh Rao of High Point, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. In the quarterfinals he defeated Mason Schermerhorn of Colfax, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 and took a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Tony Mule in the semifinals.
Goode, who played for UNCG from 1998-02, compiled a 61-32 singles record and finished with a Southern Conference record of 25-11.
