UNCG closes out regular season with 5-2 win over Davidson, awaits seed

GREENSBORO, NC –  UNC Greensboro got straight-set wins by Andrey Bubnov, Martin Redelinghuys, Arsel Kumdereli and William Adeimy as the Spartans closed out the regular season with a 5-2 win over rival Davidson in Southern Conference men’s tennis action.

UNCG will have to await the result of Saturday’s match between Georgia Southern and The Citadel to see where it will be seeded in next week’s Southern Conference Tournament. Should Georgia Southern lose, UNCG would be seeded No. 7 because of its win over Davidson. However, if the Eagles beat The Ctiadel, a three-way tie would have to be broken with Georgia Southern, Davidson and UNCG.

Bubnov and Kumdereli earned easy wins at Nos. 1 and 4 singles. Bubnov topped Flaviu Simihaian, 6-3 and 6-1, while Kumdereli topped Scott Myers by identical 6-2 scores.

Redelinghuys and Adeimy had to work a little harder for their wins. Redelinghuys topped John Bolton at No. 2 singles, 7-5 and 6-2. Adeimy beat Sam Burns at No. 6 singles, 6-3 and 6-4.

Senior Jason Steinhorn, playing in his final home match on the UNCG Tennis Courts, earned a three-set win at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0, winning the third-set breaker by a 10-8 score.

The two teams split doubles pro-sets, but UNCG (7-14, 2-7) won the third pro-set by default to wrap up the 6-1 win.
