GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's soccer team allowed the game's lone goal in the 110th minute of action Saturday night as the Spartans dropped their first Southern Conference game of the season, falling 1-0 to Wofford at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Terriers scored the game-winning goal with 56 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to secure the victory.
"Tonight was very tough one to take, in double overtime," head coach Justin Maullin
said. "Soccer is a cruel game in overtime, but overall I was proud of our guys today. We went with three new faces in the lineup in Nathan Bunch
, Noah Deangelo and Dustin Gamradt
who all did a great job. We lacked a little quality in the final third as we created some good chances but couldn't convert for the goal."
The Spartans had the game's first quality chance in the 27th
minute of play as they came close to scoring off a corner kick. Maximilian Schulz
(Northeim, Germany/Gymnasium Corvinianum) sent the ball to the back post where senior forward Hakan Ilhan
(Stuttgart, Germany/Univ. of Stuttgart) headed the ball back across the six-yard box. Redshirt sophomore Nathan Bunch (Raleigh, N.C./Incarnate Word) ripped shot from six-yards out that looked goal-bound, but the Wofford defender cleared the shot off the line to keep the game scoreless.
Wofford (7-4-0, 1-0-0 SoCon) had its best chance of the half in the 34th minute off of a long throw-in. The Spartans cleared the ball from immediate danger but the clear only went to the top of the 18-yard box where Ryan Hurst one-touched a shot that sailed just over the cross bar out of harm's way.
UNCG (4-6-2, 2-1-0 SoCon) had another prime scoring chance in the final minute of the first half as Ilhan was pulled down 20-yards out. Ilhan stepped up to the free kick and ripped a bending shot that just cleared the cross bar sending the teams into halftime in a scoreless tie.
Redshirt freshman Dustin Gamradt (Kiel, Germany/Hebbelschule) had a chance in the 51st minute as he received a pass from Ilhan. Gamradt ripped a shot from eight-yards out that sailed just over the goal.
Wofford started to put the pressure on the Spartans down the stretch of the second half as Benny Puetter struck a shot from 20 yards out that fifth-year senior goalkeeper Peyton Ford
(Jamestown, N.C./Southwest Guilford) had to make a diving save to thwart. The Terriers had another chance in the 69th
minute off a corner kick as Forrest Lasso ripped a header towards goal but junior defender Mahdi Ali
(Helsinki, Finland/Vuosaaren Lukio) was there to clear it off the end line.
Schulz came within inches of giving the Spartans the lead in the 76th minute as he made a run and rocketed a shot into the side netting. Ali had another chance for the Spartans in the 81st minute off a corner kick but his header went just over the cross bar.
The teams headed into the overtime period with the Terriers coming within inches of goal in the 95th minute as Nestor Jaramillo took a chance off a long run from 20-yards out but Ford made a sprawling save to keep the ball out of the goal.
Wofford got the game's only goal off of a counter attack in the final minute of the game. Jaramillo corralled the ball near the end line and sent a cross into the box where it was sent back across the grain to Blair Gaines who got his head on the ball to poke it past Ford for just his second goal of the season.
UNCG continues play Tuesday evening as it hosts the College of Charleston in SoCon action. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
