Men's Soccer Travels To Duke Tuesday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's soccer team plays on the road for the sixth time in its first eight of the season Tuesday night as the Spartans travel to Atlantic Coast Conference foe Duke. Senior forward Hakan Ilhan (Stuttgart, Germany/Univ. of Stuttgart) leads the team with 11 points and has scored a team-high five goals while handing out an assist. Ilhan scored the game-tying goal in the 20th minute of action against the 49ers to take over the team lead in scoring. Junior Oddur Gudmundsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) is second on the team with four goals, while Maximilian Schulz (Northeim, Germany/Gymnasium Corvinianum) leads the team with four assists.
Duke enters the game with a 3-3-0 overall record as the Blue Devils have defeated Delaware, Georgia State and Clemson while falling to No. 18 Notre Dame, Santa Clara and Virginia. Duke has scored eight goals this season while allowing five goals against. The Blue Devils are led by Sebastian Ilbeagha who has scored a team-high seven points on the strength of three goals and an assist.
Tuesday's game marks the 18th meeting all-time between UNCG and Duke. The Spartans trail the all-time series by a 4-13-0 margin but has won two out of the last three meetings, including last season's 3-2 victory over the then-ranked No. 12 Blue Devils. Ilhan scored two goals in the victory, including the eventual game-winning goal in the 56th minute as UNCG took a 3-0 lead. Duke was paced by Andrew Wenger who tallied two second half goals as the Blue Devils tried to mount a late rally.
