Maximilian Schulz Named SoCon Men’s Soccer Player Of The Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's soccer junior midfielder Maximilian Schulz (Northeim, Germany/Gymnasium Corvinianum) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday morning. Schulz led the Spartans to a season-opening 2-2 tie at UNCW in double overtime.

"We are extremely happy for Max winning this award," head coach Justin Maullin said. "He came into camp as one of our fittest players on the team, consistently ranking at the top of our fitness tests. He has a terrific attitude on and off the field and we are pleased the SoCon has recognized his play."

Schulz had a stellar debut for UNCG, posting three points in his opening game as a Spartan with a goal and an assist. He became the first Spartan to score a goal in his first career game since Hakan Ilhan found the back of the net in his opening act against Charlotte Sept. 1, 2010. Additionally, he became the first UNCG player to post a multiple-point game in his debut since Aug. 31, 2007 when transfer Tebatso Manyama scored three points (1g, 1a) and freshman Nirav Kadam posted four points (2g) in their debuts against Georgetown.

Schulz handed out an assist on the Spartans' first goal of the 2012 season, sending a cross into the box in the 23rd minute on Oddur Gundmundsson's goal. He rallied the Spartans in the 53rd minute of play, scoring the game-tying goal from 10-yards out for his first career tally.

Schulz and the Spartans continue their four-game road swing tonight as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn., for a battle against East Tennessee State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with live stats and live video available courtesy of ETSU with links online at www.uncgspartans.com.
