GREENSBORO, N.C.—Longwood handed UNCG men's soccer a 2-0 non-conference defeat, Wednesday at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Lancers (8-6-1) wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring in the fifth minute when Patrick McDaniel headed in a Chris Saul corner kick for a 1-0 lead.
Will Mack nearly scored the equalizer for the Spartans (5-7-1) in the 23rd minute, but his blast from 25 yards out hit the left post.
Longwood took a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute on a goal by Nick Surkamp. The Lancers sliced through the UNCG defense on crisp passes by Brian Henry and Zach Crandall, who found Surkamp on the left side of the goal for the score.
The Spartans were unlucky again as they tried to rally late in the match. Austin Miller's header in the 80th minute ricocheted off the crossbar and bounced away from the goal, denying UNCG a chance to cut the deficit in half.
Davis Griffin played all 90 minutes in goal for the Spartans as regular starter Peyton Ford was give the night off to rest. Griffin turned in a fine performance with six saves while facing 17 shots. Longwood keeper Joel Helmick picked up the victory and the shutout by also making six saves on 14 shots.
The match featured a total of 18 corner kicks (UNCG 10, Longwood 8), including five by the Spartans during a 2-minute, 30-second stretch late in the second half.
The Spartans resume Southern Conference play when they visit College of Charleston, 7 p.m., Saturday.
