BOONE, N.C.—Appalachian State's David Dodge scored the game's only goal in the 68th minute to propel the Mountaineers to a 1-0 Southern Conference win over UNCG, Saturday at ASU Soccer Stadium.
Dodge scored after teammate Mark Bridges knocked a shot off the goal post. Dodge corralled the rebound and punched a shot past UNCG keeper Peyton Ford.
UNCG (4-6-0 overall, 1-1-0 SoCon) had five shots on goal in the second half, including two after Dodge's goal. But ASU (7-2-2, 2-0-0) keeper Danny Free made the stop each time, finishing the match with six saves overall.
Ford finished with five saves for the Spartans, including four in the first half.
The Spartans were out-shot by the Mountaineers, 13-7. Oddur Gudmundsson led UNCG with four shots. Both teams took six shots on goal and each squad also had four corner kicks.
UNCG returns to action by hosting SoCon foe Davidson, 7 p.m., Wednesday at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
