The Spartans close out regular season play on Tuesday night when they visit Longwood University. UNCG is unbeaten in its last seven matches and has already wrapped up a share of the Southern Conference regular season title and the upcoming tournament's No. 1 seed.
Longwood has lost four of its last five, including its last match on Friday night, a 2-1 setback at Houston Baptist.
The teams have two common opponents this season. Longwood lost to Richmond in overtime, 3-2, and defeated Navy, 2-1. The Spartans defeated Richmond, 2-0, and Navy, 1-0.
Longwood has had two players provided that vast majority of its offense. Harvey Headley and Zack Mahon have provided for 10 of Longwood's 13 goals this season. Joel Helmick is Longwood's goalkeeper. He has a 1.50 GAA in 1380 minutes of action.
UNCG has been an offensive juggernaut lately. UNCG has 31 goals in 17 matches this season – 17 of those coming in the last seven matches. Since an eight-day layoff that coach Justin Maullin thought was very important for his team to get its legs back, the Spartans have outscored their opposition, 18-6 in those six matches, going 5-0-2 in that span.
Sophomore Hakan Ilhan leads the Spartans in scoring with 21 points (7g, 7a). He is the first Spartan to surpass the 20-point mark since Thomas Campbell's 29 points in 2007. Freshman Brian Graham is second with 15 points on the year (6g, 3a). Sophomore Peyton Ford is UNCG's goalkeeper, logging a 1.19 GAA and .734 save percentage in 1592 minutes of action. In the seven-game unbeaten streak, Ford has a 0.82 GAA and an .806 save percentage.
The Spartans host Georgia Southern in a Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinal match Saturday night at 7 p.m.
