UNCG steps out of conference to take on Gardner-Webb on Homecoming weekend for the Bulldogs. The Spartans defeated Gardner-Webb, 3-1, last year in Greensboro. + UNCG is coming off a 4-2 win over Wofford on Tuesday night. Freshman Brian Graham was a one-man wrecking crew for the Spartans with three goals and an assist. The seven points on the night were the most by a Spartan since Oct. 1999 when current MLS player Alejandro Moreno had four goals for eight points in a win over The Citadel.
Gardner-Webb comes in having beaten Liberty on Tuesday night, 2-0, in a Big South Match. That lifted the Bulldogs to 3-2 in Big South play on the season. Adam Garcia had eight saves in the win for Gardner-Webb. The Bulldogs scored twice in a four-minute span – once at the end of the first half and the other early in the second half.
Nicolas Wrobel leads Gardner-Webb in scoring with 14 points. He has a team-best six goals to go along with two assists. Romeo Kabanda has 12 points (4g, 4a) for the Bulldogs this season. Gardner-Webb has surrendered 22 goals this season, but nine of those came in losses to Clemson (5-0) and High Point (4-0). Garcia has a 1.68 GAA in net for the Bulldogs with a .691 save percentage in 1128 minutes of action.
UNCG is the third SoCon team that Gardner-Webb will face this season. The Bulldogs lost to Davidson at home in overtime, 1-0, and at Appalachian State, 3-1.
Sophomore Hakan Ilhan leads the Spartans in scoring with 13 points (4g, 5a). Brian Graham's huge night on Tuesday moved him up to second on the team with 12 points, including a team-best five goals. Peyton Ford is UNCG's goalkeeper, logging a 1.35 GAA and .726 save percentage in 1330 minutes of action.
The Spartans return home and go back into conference play on Tuesday night with a match against Appalachian State at 7 p.m. that will go a long way in determining home field in the SoCon Tournament's quarterfinal round.
