Spartans open SoCon play, host Elon on Saturday night

+ The Spartans return home hoping to snap a two-game losing skid when they play host to Elon on Saturday night. UNCG lost to High Point, 3-1, on Tuesday night. Eli Garner tallied his third goal of the year just 9:02 into the match, but the Panthers scored three unanswered goals after that.
+ UNCG leads the all-time series, 10-6-1. Elon won last year's match at home, 1-0, for its second straight win in the series. UNCG last won Nov. 3, 2007 at Elon, 3-0.
+ The Phoenix are coming off a 1-1 tie with No. 9 Duke on Tuesday night for their third tie of the season. Senior goalie Clint Irwin tied his career high with nine saves in the game. Irwin had posted nine stops on two other occasions during his career, most recently against North Carolina in 2009. Duke had take a 1-0 lead early in the second half. However, in the 74th minute, Elon forward Denzel Ogunyase sent a long shot from the right side of the field into the box. The shot appeared to be going wide of the net before a Duke player redirected the ball into the goal for an own goal that tied the game.
+ Chris Thomas leads Elon in scoring this season with five goals for 10 points. He is tied for the league-lead in goals and second in points this season. Elon keeper Clint Irwin, who is a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, has a 0.81 GAA average this season and two shutouts thus far. Irwin's .833 save percentage is second in the league.
+ Hakan Ilhan and Eli Garner are tied for the team-lead in scoring with six points each for UNCG. Garner leads the team in goals with three.
+ UNCG is expected to regain the services of senior Michael Bonilla for Saturday's match. Bonilla has been out with an injury for the last month.
+ Elon won its conference opener last weekend, 4-1, over Davidson. Gabe Latigue scored twice in the win.
+ UNCG has a week off after Saturday's match. The Spartans travel to Georgia Southern for a match next Sunday, October 10, at 2 p.m.
