UNCG's A.J. Nelson named SoCon Men's Soccer Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro freshman midfielder A.J. Nelson has been named the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week for all games played Oct. 20-26.
Nelson picked up four points on a goal and two assists in a 6-0 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday evening. The Jacksonville , Fla., native assisted on UNCG's first two goals. He sent a pass to the top of the box which Thomas Campbell converted into a goal in the sixth minute. Nelson sent a pass from the right side to Will Mack in the 31st minute that led to the Spartans' second goal. Nelson later scored his second goal of the year on a header off of a free kick in the 51st minute, which staked UNCG to a 4-0 lead early in the second half and ended any thoughts of a Georgia Southern second-half rally.
It was the second time in as many weeks that a Spartan won the conference's weekly honor. Last week, Campbell won the award.
Nelson is tied for the team lead with four assists this season and is tied for second on the squad with eight points.
The Spartans (5-7-3, 2-1-1 SoCon) return to action tonight when they travel to face Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
