UNCG's Jokull Elisabetarson drafted by MLS's Chicago Fire

ST. LOUIS, MO – UNC Greensboro midfielder Jokull Elisabetarson was selected by the Chicago Fire in the fourth round of the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft Thursday evening.

Elisabetarson, a native of Reykjavík, Iceland, was the 52nd overall pick in the draft. He started all 90 matches during his UNCG career in the midfield, twice earning first team All-Southern Conference honors. This past season, he was also a second-team all-region selection by the NSCAA. A member of the Icelandic National program for several years, he recorded 12 goals and 10 assists in his collegiate career and was part of three squads that made the NCAA Tournament's round of 16 while at UNCG.

Elisbetarson will look to join four other Spartan alumni as MLS players of the past and present. Rusty Pierce spent seven seasons with New England, Real Salt Lake and Columbus before retiring prior to last season, appearing in 159 matches during his career. Alejandro Moreno is still in MLS, having just completed his seventh season. He is currently with Columbus and also has played with Los Angeles, San Jose and Houston.

Scott Jones and Randi Patterson played in MLS in 2007 with Dallas and Red Bull New York, respectively. Those two former teammates of Elisabetarson played in the USL this past season.
