UNCG falls at Furman in double overtime, 3-2
GREENVILLE, SC – Coleton Hanning scored his second goal of the night with 2:47 remaining in the second overtime to lift Furman past UNC Greensboro, 3-2, in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday night.
The loss, which dropped the Spartans to 3-7-1 on the season, was UNCG's sixth by one goal this season. The Spartans are 2-6-1 in matches decided by one goal or less this season. The last seven meetings between Furman and UNCG match have been decided by one goal or less, including the last two in overtime.
Furman (6-4-1, 1-0-0), the SoCon's pre-season favorite, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Andrew Krysiak's third goal of the season. He connected on a shot from 13 yards out after a through ball by Eric Cobleigh into the left side of the box.
UNCG tied the game at 30:08. Freshman Cruz Oronos, collecting a deflection in the midfield, connected on a shot from 30 yards out into the left side of the goal for his first collegiate tally.
The score stayed that way until a wild exchange late in regulation. With 13:49 left in the second half, Fabien Vorbe's shot was knocked down, but Henning knocked it home for a 2-1 Paladin advantage. The Spartans had an answer back, though, just 41 seconds later. Off a free kick, Jokull Elisabetarson found E.J. O'Keeffe at the far post for O'Keeffe's first tally of the year and a 2-2 deadlock.
But Henning, a strong early-season candidate for SoCon Freshman of the Year, connected again late in the second overtime. Henning got a head on Eric Cobleigh's ball and flicked it just inside the far post for his sixth goal of the season and the game-winner.
UNCG goalkeeper Nate Berry kept the Spartans in the game despite Furman's 25-9 advantage in shots. Berry had nine saves on the night, all of them after halftime.
The Spartans return home to host Wofford on Tuesday at 7 pm.
