UNCG falls to ODU, Winthrop tops Elon in OT at Kickoff Classic
GREENSBORO, NC – It was a pair of nail biters on the final day of men's soccer action at the UNCG Kickoff Classic as Winthrop topped Elon in overtime, 2-1, and Old Dominion held off UNCG, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
In the first game, Winthrop's Matthew Skonicki scored twice, including the game-winner 3:22 into overtime to give the Eagles (3-1-0) their third-straight win. Skonicki scored off a feed from Matt Lacey to break the 1-1 deadlock.
Skonicki had staked Winthrop to a 1-0 lead at the 15:50 mark. Otto Loewy lofted a long ball from beyond midfield towards the box. Skonicki raced past the backline of defense and got one-on-one with the keeper, poking it home for his second goal of the season.
Elon tied the score just 1:38 before intermission. Brad Franks' corner kick found the head of Stephen Dilger just inside the 6-yard box. Dilger, who had not played in Elon's first two matches this season and had just entered Sunday's contest, knocked it home to tie the match.
Elon (0-2-1) outshot Winthrop, 14-8, on the afternoon and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
In the second game, Old Dominion and UNCG combined for three goals in a span of 2:37 – sandwiched around the intermission. UNCG took a 1-0 lead with just 16 seconds left before halftime off a header. Jokull Elisabetarson's corner kick was knocked in by Charlotte, NC native Matt Elliott. It was the first collegiate goal for Elliott.
Old Dominion, which hadn't scored in the first 335 minutes of its young season, countered quickly in the second half, however. Just 33 seconds in, T.J. Beaulieu scored from the top right corner of the box off of a feed by Nane Joseph to tie the game.
The Monarchs (1-2-1) took the lead for good with an own goal at 47:21. Dylan Montambo started the play with a corner kick. The ball was intended for Beaulieu, skipped through Beaulieu and bounced off two UNCG defenders into the goal to give Old Dominion a 2-1 lead.
UNCG (0-3-0) had several chances in the closing seconds, but could not get the equalizer as it lost its third one-goal game of the young season.
UNCG returns to action next Friday when it faces East Tennessee State at the Elon Tournament. Action gets underway at 5 pm.
