WILLIAMSBURG, VA – Jokull Elisabetarson connected on a penalty kick early in the first half, but it was all the offense UNC Greensboro could muster as the Spartans dropped a 2-1 decision at William & Mary in men's soccer action Saturday night.
Elisabetarson, a senior from Iceland, scored off a penalty kick at the 14-minute mark of the first half. The foul was called after Nirav Kadam was taken down inside the box. However, it was just one of two shots for UNCG in the first half and one of four for the entire match. The Tribe outshot the Spartans, 17-4, in the opening match for both squads.
William & Mary evened the score 3:17 before intermission. Andrew Hoxie scored on a penalty kick of his own to even the score.
The score remained that way until the closing minutes of regulation. With just 2:45 left in the second half, Nick Orozco scored off a rebound of a shot by Hoxie to break the deadlock and give the Tribe their first win of the young season.
Chad Janda has five saves for the Spartans (0-1-0) in goal. Andrew McAdams had one save for William & Mary (1-0-0).
With the loss, UNCG is 17-7-1 in openers under legendary head coach Michael Parker. UNCG is now 7-3-1 in its last 11 openers under Parker. The Tribe are now 31-6-2 all-time in season openers and a perfect 5-0 under head coach Chris Norris. William & Mary leads the all-time series, 6-2-1.
The Spartans will return home to host the UNCG Kickoff Classic next weekend, playing host to Winthrop on Friday at approximately 7:30 pm. Elon and Old Dominion square off in the first game of the tournament beginning at 5 pm on Friday night.
