UNCG fit to be tied again, finishes in 1-1 deadlock with Lafayette
GREENSBORO, NC – Overtime was the theme of the second day at the UNCG Soccer Classic as Davidson topped Dayton in the first extra-session, 2-1, while UNCG and Lafayette played two extra-sessions and finished in a 1-1 deadlock.
UNCG and Lafayette both scored first half goals on penalty kicks. The Spartans (1-1-2) scored first at 20:38 when Thomas Campbell was taken down by Corey Dempsey on a breakaway. Dempsey was given a red card for his actions and the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick. Jokull Elisabetarson converted the ensuing kick for his second goal of the game and a 1-0 lead.
The Lepoards (2-1-1) tied the game less than three minutes later with a penalty kick of their own. After a Spartan foul inside the box, Scott Hawkins converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the weekend and a 1-1 score.
The score remained that way despite the Leopards playing a man down and UNCG outshooting Lafayette 13-3 after halftime. For the game, UNCG had a 21-7 advantage in shots and a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
It was the first time since 1995 that UNCG has played consecutive ties. The Spartans are also unbeaten in their last seven overtime matches (4-0-3) going back to September 2005.
In the first game of the day, Davidson picked up its first win of the year, surviving a late-tying goal by the Flyers. The Wildcats (1-3-0) took a 1-0 lead on Aaron West’s goal at 12:01. West scored on a header after Whitey Bolan’s shot hit the crossbar and came down to West right in the goal mouth.
Dayton (2-1-1), however, tied the score with just 46 seconds remaining in regulation time. Alex Torda scored from 15 yards out into the lower left corner to tie the match and force overtime.
Machel Turner won it for Davidson just 3:28 into the extra session. Off of a feed from Tom Lavan, Turner his a blast into the top nearside corner to give the Wildcats their first win of the season.
UNCG begins a four-game road trips when it returns to action on Wednesday night against High Point. Game time is set for 7 pm.
