Three Spartans earn SoCon November Athletes of the Month

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Southern Conference announced Wednesday that UNC Greensboro’s Scott Jones, Shannon Donovan and Jasmine Byrd were each awarded SoCon November Athlete of the Month in their respective sports.

Jones, a senior midfielder from Dallas, TX, earned men’s soccer Athlete of the Month honors. Jones tallied three goals and two assists in November. He had one goal in the 3-0 win over Georgia Southern in the SoCon championship match on November 5. Jones also scored two game-winners in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament to help the Spartans reach the round of 16 for the third consecutive year. He was named first team All-SoCon for the fourth straight year and also earned his third consecutive NSCAA All-American honor.

Donovan, a senior defender, was awarded women’s soccer Athlete of the Month. The Melville, NY, native was named SoCon Player of the Year and also earned Most Outstanding Performer in the conference tournament in November. She had two goals and an assist in UNCG’s 3-1 win over Furman in the conference championship match on Nov. 5. Donovan was placed on the Soccer Buzz Team of the Week on Nov. 9 for her efforts.

Byrd, a Dumfries, VA, native, received women’s basketball Athlete of the Month. The senior guard averaged 19.7 points per game in November. She scored 20 or more points in four of the Spartans’ six games and leads the league in scoring. Byrd was named the UNCG Thanksgiving Tournament MVP after helping the Spartans win their own tournament. She was also awarded SoCon Player of the Week on Nov. 28 for her role in UNCG’s two tournament wins.

One athlete is chosen from each of the following sports: football (offensive and defensive), men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling.
