Former Spartan midfielder Mike Richardson inks deal with Charleston
CHARLESTON, SC – Now former UNC Greensboro men’s soccer midfielder Mike Richardson has signed a contract to play with the Charleston Battery of the United Soccer League’s First Division.
Richardson was apart of UNCG teams that won two SoCon Men’s Soccer Tournament championships at Blackbaud Stadium where the Battery play their home matches. He is the fourth player off of last year’s Spartan squad to sign a professional contract for this season. Michael FitzGerald is playing with the Wilmington Hammerheads in the USL’s Second Division. Midfielder Scott Jones signed with FC Dallas after being drafted in the MLS SuperDraft with the 28th overall pick. Forward Randi Patterson was picked up by Red Bull New York in the supplemental draft. Both players are still with their respective teams, starting the season last week on the reserve squad.
Terms of Richardson’s contract were not released by the Battery. The Dobson, NC native was an All-Southern Conference selection this past year. He finished the year fourth on the team in scoring with 19 points (5g, 9a). For his career, Richardson finished with 31 points on 11 goals and nine assists.
Charleston opens the season at home on Friday against the Minnesota Thunder in a game that will be televised by Fox Soccer Channel. Kickoff at Blackbaud Stadium is set for 8 pm.
