Three UNCG men's soccer players named Academic All-District III
GREENSBORO, NC – Three UNC Greensboro men’s soccer players have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District III men's soccer second team. Casey Davis, Scott Jones and David Worthen were selected by sports information professionals for both their hard work on the field and in the classroom.
Davis, a senior defender from Columbus, NC (Spartanburg [SC] Day School), has a 3.67 grade point average as a mathematics major at UNCG. On the pitch, Davis was selected second team All-Southern Conference on Tuesday after starting 17 and appearing in all 18 matches this season. He is a key member of the Spartans defense that has allowed only 17 goals (0.92 GAA) in 2005.
Jones, the junior midfielder from Dallas, TX, has a 3.32 grade point average as a hospitality management major. The Jesuit College Prep product was selected first team All-SoCon yesterday for the third straight year. Jones is one of 25 candidates nationally for the Hermann Award, which is presented to the Division I Soccer Player of the Year. He has started all 18 games this season and ranks second on the team with 20 points on four goals and 12 assists. Jones ranks seventh in the nation with 0.67 assists per game.
Worthen, a redshirt sophomore defender from Morehead City, NC (West Carteret HS), has compiled a 3.48 GPA as a biology major at UNCG. Worthen has started all 16 games he has appeared in this season and was selected first team All-SoCon for the second straight year on Tuesday. He is also a key backline member for the Spartans defense that has shutout nine of their 18 opponents this fall.
To qualify for Academic All-America status, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and have a 3.2 grade point average.
Second-seeded UNCG will take on No. 3 Elon in a SoCon semifinal match this Friday at 7 pm at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC.
