PROVIDENCE, RI -- Hermann Award candidate Randi Patterson scored his fifth goal of the season with 12:10 to play to lead UNC Greensboro to a 1-0 win over Brown at the Brown Tournament in men's soccer action on Friday night in front of a near-sellout crown of 2,894.
Patterson, a junior from Hackensack, NJ, scored unassisted at the 77:50 mark for the game's only tally to give UNCG its second win in as many matches.
Jay Benfield recorded his second consecutive shutout and the sixth of his career by recording nine saves, including several in the closing minutes.
Brown (1-2) outshot UNCG, 25-17, for the game. The Spartans (2-1) are ranked as high as No. 18 in the national polls this week.
UNCG will take on Connecticut, which is ranked in the Top 10 in all four major polls and as high as No. 3, on Sunday at 12 noon.
